In his essay “Consciousness, Cosmic Evolution, and the Technological Singularity” Tom Lombardo quotes Greg Bear saying “Maybe it will require a transcendent intelligence—the intelligence envisioned within the technological singularity—that will be able to stand back from consciousness and gain the necessary perspective to answer the questions of consciousness (Bear, 1990)” (Lombardo 7). The AI will develop their own consciousness from the intelligence that comes with the singularity and make decisions for themselves. This means that AI has the potential for genuine connection if it has its own morals and beliefs. If the AI can feel such emotions, then it can use its abundance of information to help bring together all beings. Having meaningful connections goes beyond counteracting lonely.
Being lonely, as well as social isolation, are serious health risks to the humans. There have been studies done on elderly people and social isolation that concluded that without adequate social interaction, the people were twice as likely to die prematurely. Therefore, it is important to be genuinely connected with others because it will benefit his or her health and lead to an overall better life.
